DOCTRINE:

Initially (7968) viewed as "non-juridical." Not often enforced today.


CREEDS:
Referenced, but not spelled out in the Discipline. Used for worship, but not uniformly affirmed by leadership.


SCRIPTURE:
"Primary source and criterion for Christian doctrine."
In reality, often modified, reinterpreted by other sources, or considered less impactful than our personal experience.


HUMAN SEXUALITY:
God's gift to all persons; affirmed only with the covenant of monogamous, heterosexual marriage (Likely to be changed in a post-separation UMC).


CHURCH PROPERTY:
Held in trust by each church's Annual Conference.


ARTICLES OF RELIGION:
Stated doctrinal standards seldom referenced; "deemed congruent" but not reconciled to each other.


ADAPTING THE DISCIPLINE:
Central conferences can adapt certain parts of the Book of Discipline to fit legal and cultural situation.

Mandatory for all clergy to preach and maintain.



CREEDS:
Foundational documents spelled out in the Discipline expressing orthodox Christian teaching.

SCRIPTURE:
Primary rule and authority for faith, morals and service, against which all other authorities must be measured.


HUMAN SEXUALITY:
A gift of God, affirmed as it is exercised within the legal and spiritual covenant of a loving and monogamous marriage between one man and one woman.


CHURCH PROPERTY:
Owned by local church.

 

ARTICLES OF RELIGION:
Doctrinal standards that define the doctrinal boundaries of the GMC.
